Leveraging SharePoint To Drive Employee Engagement, Efficiency and Performance
    Read Full Details

In a recent survey of our associates, 88% felt that internal communications has improved or significantly improved over the course of the last 12 months. Just over two years ago, we rolled out SharePoint as the communication and collaboration platform for OfficeMax Grand & Toy. The initial implementation focused on using the technology to deliver a dynamic corporate intranet. As the implementation has evolved we are now leveraging the flexibility and power of the SharePoint environment to develop "solutions" to address business efficiencies, share best practice, drive engagement and empower our associates to perform at their best. During this session, I will share how we have used features in SharePoint to achieve significant improvements in internal communications. In addition, participants will gain valuable insight into how we’ve leveraged the features of the SharePoint platform to create "no code" based, powerful business solutions quickly. Adding a DoD 5015.2-certified records management back-end for SharePoint is a concern for many organizations. An out-of the-box integration between SharePoint and enterprise content management (ECM) can strengthen information governance while maintaining ease of collaboration.

In this session, you will learn how the City of Saint John, NB, which has implemented the 2011 Municipal Reference Authority (MRA) file plan and retention schedule, has significantly streamlined records management through integrating Laserfiche ECM with their existing SharePoint installation. We’ll also walk through the benefits of this composite content application-based approach, so you leave with great new ideas to build other SharePoint and Laserfiche-based composite applications.

    Running SharePoint in Azure IaaS
    Read Full Details

My IT organizations are struggling with how to effectively take advantage of "the cloud." If SharePoint is in the mix, perhaps Office365 has been evaluated. Unfortunately, not all firms are ready for some of the compromises that SharePoint Online imposes. Fortunately, there's another way; you can run SharePoint in Azure's IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) offering, getting all of the benefits of an on-premise implementation, while being able to take advantage of the scale and favorable economics of cloud hosting. Shawn Shell, Vice President of Consulting at Hitachi Consulting, will show how SharePoint can be effectively hosted on Azure, demonstrate real-world implementations and discuss the flexibility afforded by this model, including making the implementation on-premises (with little effort) if desired.

How to Provide Continuous Integration of SharePoint 2013 Apps
    Read Full Details

Historically, deployment of SharePoint solutions was a simple process of uploading a solution file into a solution gallery or relying on a SharePoint administrator to install the solution into the farm gallery. Microsoft did not provide any guidance on how to manage this process on an enterprise level, and therefore organizations were forced to implement a disjunction and manual deployment process. Today, Microsoft promotes Apps as the way to develop solutions, but the deployment process is very different from the previous experience and guidance on how to manage this process is non-existent. A major improvement with Apps application development is the ability to leverage the common patterns, practices, and frameworks that standard .Net development utilizes, however there is no official guidance on how to incorporate the same ALM practices with this new App packaging method. From a SharePoint developer’s standpoint, the Apps packaging and code-hosted-somewhere-else is foreign and presents some serious challenges. This discussion will present strategies from a service provider’s perspective how implement continuous deployment of SharePoint Apps and the benefits of investing in this effort. Victorian Supreme Court - Making the Case for Cloud
    Read Full Details

The Victorian government has moved forward from proof of concept to a full online system for lodging, accessing, and managing case files for the state's Supreme Court. Unveiled by Victorian Minister for Technology Gordon Rich-Phillips, the SharePoint Online Office 365 and Azure-based system, dubbed RedCrest, makes use of high-speed broadband to efficiently and cost-effectively manage case files, superseding the outdated, time-consuming process involving physical documents.

During this session learn how the Supreme Court leverages SharePoint Online and Azure to allow barristers and solicitors to create their identity, initiate a case electronically (automatically creating and populating a case site in SharePoint Online), and collaborate with their peers on the plaintiff, defense, and court sides through the life cycle of each case. Under the hood we will demonstrate and explain how we turned the Office 365 and ADFS federation model around to allow external users to securely access the portal, through digital identities fully managed by the court through RedCrest.http://www.redcrest.com.au/SitePages/Home.aspx http://www.zdnet.com/victorian-supreme-court-gets-cloud-for-case-management-7000019941/

Outsourcing Your SharePoint Hosting: The Cloud’s Fine Print Magnified
    Read Full Details

This presentation is oriented towards organizations thinking about upgrading SharePoint in the near future. The objective is to provide decision makers and Shar0ePoint administrators with a simple yet detailed analysis framework that covers all technical and business angles, so that they can make an informed decision when deploying a new SharePoint version.  High-level IT continuum (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) concepts will be covered, along with the major characteristics of the most popular cloud offerings for SharePoint such as O365, Azure, AWS and others.

Whether you are pro- or anti-cloud, or fall somewhere in between, dismissing the cloud outright is no longer an option. Understanding all the available hosting options will impact any decision to continue operating SharePoint internally. Many factors need to be considered, such as legal, provider due diligence, migration, support, integration, location and licensing, as well as current and future requirements. This presentation will cover the most important aspects that must be considered during decision making. Since cost is usually the main focus, it will be examined in detail throughout the presentation. Attendees will leave this session with a crystal-clear big picture, which they can use to support their recommendations to upper management.

    Secrets of Successful SharePoint Intranets
    Read Full Details

Creating an Intranet on SharePoint involves a unique combination of people, identifying business needs and leveraging the platform effectively. Organisations that fail to understand the business and how to leverage SharePoint to surface key business information and enable processes ultimately does not deliver the potential value that an intranet can provide. In this session, learn from the mistakes of other organisations as well as the practices that can deliver real results within a minimal investment. Join Michal as we delve into why SharePoint has been so successful but has yet under delivered its promises to many organizations though a combination of case studies, stories and personal experience.

    This session will cover:
    - Why the majority of SharePoint projects fail (Tip: It's not the technology)
    - Functional areas that SharePoint excels at and some of its weaknesses
    - Why alignment between IT and the business is a huge factor for success
    - How to properly structure change management efforts
    - Who you need on your intranet team for a successful journey
    - A range of SharePoint specific examples that can improve your SharePoint Intranet with a minimal investment.

Taxonomy Development: Lessons from a Librarian
    Read Full Details

Working with clients to develop a taxonomy is always a challenge. Although new to the consulting arena, here’s what I’ve learned so far – the more you involve the client, the slower the process can become. (In other words, if you give a mouse a cookie, it’s going to want a glass of milk.) Too many "cooks" in the Information Architecture ‘kitchen’ can be disastrous, but so can too few of the wrong ones. Both situations can mean weeks of feedback and design revisions, often at the cost of the implementation’s overall timeline. Is there a way to involve the client, economize the process, and still get a great result? In this session I will present a case study wherein I tried a workshop approach to taxonomy development, borrowing ideas from the field of Library Science. The client was an organization of about 2000 users, divided into about 7 main departments. The 3-hour workshop brought together a cross section of the organization. You will learn how getting the right people in the room can foster a positive attitude toward SharePoint implementation, and the importance of getting users to focus on their daily information consumption (and not on their org chart).

Extending SharePoint processes through Windows Phone
    Read Full Details

In this demo-driven presentation we will show how we can extend information and processes stored and running on SharePoint 2013 through Windows Phone 8. In this presentation we will create some mobile views for list and libraries and introduce the concept of Device Channels which will be used for setting up a User Interface (UI) specifically for windows Phone. After that we will introduce CSOM (Client-Side Object Model) for Windows Phone and create some apps for illustrating some of the CSOM principles and guidelines. As a major demo we will create a SharePoint-workflow or event receiver that reaches out to a Windows Phone app (using Azure Mobile Services), which will interact further with SharePoint through CSOM. The SharePoint REST-services will also be introduced briefly as an alternative to CSOM. The presentation will conclude with some general information on how to deploy the windows phone app within a company.

Managing web content on both public and internal sites has become one of the greatest challenges facing most organizations today. Trying to find the right balance of supporting internal processes producing both internal and external facing content can often require different technology to meet different needs. In this session, Join Virgil Carroll, Principal Architect at High Monkey Consulting, as he looks at the potential of SharePoint 2013 to provide an answer to these questions and more. Being a long time skeptic of SharePoint as a web content management system, Virgil will share his true ‘confessions’ around his experience in using 2013 and how this version has the technical chops as a world class WCM system. Along the way, Virgil will share with you real life practical approaches to enabling your organization to support a solid web management strategy in the future. As far as Virgil’s street cred, he has been developing websites for clients both large and small (many you have heard of) since 1998 and working with SharePoint since the word was invented!
